Let's Talk Game Awards 2024
So let's get one thing out of the way: I've never watched The Game Awards prior to this year. It's never been something I sought out since I'm so devoted to the Indie Game community. But when the suggestion was made to do a watch party for it, I thought that sounded like a lot of fun. Whether I had much opinion or not, watching it together with people would be really cool.
However, despite the fact that I've never seen it before doesn't mean I don't know the games and have opinions on them!
Game of the Year: Astro Bot
I'm not going to lie, I thought Black Myth: Wukong would win this. Given how much people have raved over this game and how prevalent it's been in the gaming space, I was surprised when Astro Bot took the win on this.
Best Ongoing Game: Helldivers 2
I was honestly so glad that Helldivers 2 won out over all the other games. It's a unique game and more niche, but it also sounds like it isn't being run into the ground like so many of the other games. Or maybe I'm just extra glad that Fortnite didn't take the win.
Best Art Direction: Metaphor: ReFantazio
C'mon now, have you seen the art in this game. Given that it's made by Atlus I expect nothing less than the best and Metaphor of course delivers. I like seeing a stylistic game win this category instead of many of the other titles. However, had Neva taken the win I also would have been excited because the art direction of Neva is downright stunning.
Best Mobile Game: Balatro
Kinda surprising to see this win over Pokemon TCG Pocket. I'm kinda tempted to try it out but I really don't need another mobile game to waste my time away with. I will admit that I wasn't rooting for Wuthering Waves nor Zenless Zone Zero despite liking both games when I played them. But I'm sorry, they aren't mobile games. Pretty sure Wuthering Waves would brick my phone if I tried to play it and both of them are optimized far more for PC.
Best Narrative: Metaphor: ReFantazio
Atlus is known for games with strong narratives. They know how to tell a good story and keep you hooked. I also know that I'm really biased towards Atlus given that Persona is my favorite video game series of all time. But given that they hooked me years ago with Persona 3 FES and have kept my attention since... I think the praise is deserved.
Best Score & Music: Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
Remember that bias I talked about. I really would have preferred Metaphor but let's be real, a FFVII remake was absolutely going to take the cake. It's a beautiful soundtrack and definitely deserving of recognition.
Best Adaptation: Fallout
Genuinely surprised Arcane didn't win. It's so beloved and has reached so many more people than League of Legends ever would. I'm not saying Fallout doesn't deserve it, but this one definitely surprised me a lot.
Best Multiplayer: Helldivers 2
People love serving the greater good. I would definitely show up to a party and play this! Though, I already know that I would be the weakest link having the most fun!
Debut Indie Game: Balatro
Definitely disappointed that this didn't go to Pacific Drive. I feel like the concept was more unique and it took greater risks, deserving recognition for it. And in a debut indie game, that would be criteria I would personally look for. Pacific Drive, you live on as a winner to me.
Most Anticipated Game: Grand Theft Auto 6
Maybe one day guys.
Best Role-Playing Game: Metaphor: ReFantazio
It's taken most of this blog post but I can finally spell the title of this game without double checking. Anyway! I definitely think this was deserved. Out of all the games this one feels most like the RPG experience that I think of. To me it's more old school feeling and personally I prefer turn based combat when I think of an RPG. Real time just doesn't hit the same in my opinion.
Content Creator: CaseOh
This man absolutely deserves to win. He's like a beacon of light every time I see his videos pop up on TikTok. Something about his over the top personality always makes me smile. Congrats man!
Best Action: Black Myth: Wukong
I'm so glad to see this game getting some love. Everyone I've talked to loves this game so much and it seems to be well deserved!
Best Sim/ Strategy Game: Frostpunk 2
I legitimately only know about this game because my friend loves it. And through him I've learned so much about it and can confidently say that this is a deserved win. It had steep competition too with Unicorn Overlord but I'm glad it managed to cinch the win!
Players' Voice: Black Myth: Wukong
Heck yea! Again, this game had such high praise and I'm glad people showed up and showed out to give it some love. I also cannot stress how happy I am that it didn't go to a gacha game and especially not Genshin Impact.
So there you have it, my thoughts and opinions on The Game Awards 2024. Honestly, some of these categories truly had steep competition, and while not all my favorites could win, I'm really happy to see so many amazing titles come out on top. And now I'm looking forward to next year!
💛 Memento
