We Need to Talk About Catly

We Need to Talk About Catly

Catly is one of many games announced at The Game Awards and it's been causing quite the stir ever since.

At first glance, this cute cat game captivated so many but it also left us asking: but what is it? People were intrigued, myself included and I'll admit to going and wishlisting the game because when I see cats, I just get so excited. And in this time of cozy MMOs hitting the scene, of course one featuring cats is the next logical approach.

The first thing to really catch me off guard though was the steam listing itself. Now, when I looked the other night it was different and now it's been shortened. I wish I had screenshotted the original one, but the edited will have to do for the time being.

The text reads: A Cat Open World, with Beautiful Cats. Hyperrealism, Actions, Cuddle, Speed, Islands, Fashion, Dreams, Snow, Robots, Plants -- all with and via Cats.

Please bear in mind that when I transposed it, I kept all punctuation and capitalization as it is in the post. The continuous capitalization immediately made me think of a Wish Listing, especially given how many seemingly random buzzwords there are in the description. Instead of telling me what the game will be about, I have a bunch of descriptive words strung together. Not to mention the strange phrasing of Actions instead of Action

It feels like a giant red flag and it only gets stranger from here.

Now I will admit that when you scroll down the game is explained a bit more. And it does actually seem to be more than just a Wish Listing. But I don't understand why this isn't in the initial description because, as you'll see, it makes a lot more sense. However most people aren't going to scroll down after seeing a description like that. They're going to skip.

Even with the description here making more sense I still have questions about what "Run to the rescue with cats peace will follow" means.

I sent the game to my friend, laughing about how cute it was and how even though it was a bit sketchy, I was still invested because cats. And he pointed out something wild. This game is considered similar to Sons of the Forest.

For anyone who might not know, Sons of the Forest is a horror survival crafting game. It's part of a series that I really enjoy but the game has no cats (Thank Heavens), isn't cozy, nor is it an MMO. It's a horror game and a good one at that.

It could be that the action and open world tags are what link the two, but I still feel there are better choices to compare it to than Sons of the Forest.

Even giving it the benefit of the doubt since sometimes Steam links some strange games together, there's still more red flags to discuss.

I scrolled down further and saw something that caught my eye. Instead of the news and announcements discussing updates about the game or any sort of progress, the last two are both for products.

The first link goes to their website which seems to have preorder information available for what I think will be in game cosmetics for both the humans and cats. Meanwhile the second link goes to an app. I couldn't tell whether this app was for Catly itself or for something just tied to the game. Either way, both of these appear to be additional products, not anything about game progress.

This is such a red flag because still people are being kept in the dark about what this game is and it appears now to only be a future cash grab. And while I have no problems with companies making products for their games, to be teasing this stuff before even showing off a solid concept... it gives me a bad vibe.

Yet this last thing is potentially the worst vibe yet.

Many have been speculating (with good reason) that Catly is just AI generated. And with images like the one below and any of the ones included in this post, it's hard to think it's anything else.

And I'll be honest, looking at the art I definitely get that vibe as well. The above image is directly off their website and it just feels off. The way the cat's proportions are wonky and how its fur seems to blend seamlessly into the carpet. These photos don't look right and there's something off about every single one of them. Below are a bunch of screenshots taken from their current Steam listing. Each one of them feels like AI art.

The entire game so far seems to have this uncanny feel to it and it makes me wonder if the gaming industry is trying to push it to move further into AI. While there is a lot of consumer backlash, many companies want to us AI to cut costs on certain things. But as yet another consumer, I can tell you right now that we know. While sometimes this AI art can captivate us momentarily, it doesn't take long for us to come to our senses and in my unprofessional opinion, this feels like AI art. The way the shading is done, how all of the cats look just a bit uncanny, and how they seems to blend into themselves and the backgrounds at odd moments. It all adds up to something suspicious.

The biggest red flag is that the AI that is most likely being used isn't even being disclosed on the Steam page. Oh, and it also seems to have a gacha system if this is anything to go by. There are so many red flags wrapped up in this game and not being properly disclosed or attempting to hide the disclosures.

Despite all this I have kept Catly on my wishlist. This is because I want to see the development updates and don't want to be on a mailing list. Given all the red flags, I think it would be near impossible to get off said mailing list and I don't feel like doing that to myself. So for now it sits on my wishlist and I'll be checking in on it to see if they ever show any content updates and not just more products they hope to sell.

But before I go I do want to offer one small, possibly unhinged conspiracy theory.

What if Catly is doing this as a marketing strategy?

Please don't click away immediately. I swear I'm going somewhere with this.

This trailer immediately caught the eyes of so many, the odd description had people even more confused, and the art looks like such blatant AI work that it's practically undeniable. But I'm here to deny it and offer a different idea to just consider for fun. Even if it turns out to be incorrect, which it most definitely will, sometimes it's fun to just theorize.

What if Catly took this approach to get people talking about their game. That bio was written a very specific but easily replicable way. I'm sure I could write something similar for this blog if I took five minutes. The art style of AI can be replicated by other artists. Essentially create something beautiful and then add some imperfections and blending issues to it. And currently all of the products that are being pushed can't actually be bought. All of these things are eye catching and even lead to the creation of this post. So could it not be a marketing experiment as the game is being worked on?

Probably not, but it's still a fun theory!

I will continue to keep an eye on Catly and wait to see when they let the cat out of the bag! Does this game catch your eye? Are you curious, excited, or already tired of hearing about it? Let me know in the comments!

Let's Talk Game Awards 2024

Let's Talk Game Awards 2024

So let's get one thing out of the way: I've never watched The Game Awards prior to this year. It's never been something I sought out since I'm so devoted to the Indie Game community. But when the suggestion was made to do a watch party for it, I thought that sounded like a lot of fun. Whether I had much opinion or not, watching it together with people would be really cool.

However, despite the fact that I've never seen it before doesn't mean I don't know the games and have opinions on them!

Game of the Year: Astro Bot
I'm not going to lie, I thought Black Myth: Wukong would win this. Given how much people have raved over this game and how prevalent it's been in the gaming space, I was surprised when Astro Bot took the win on this.

Best Ongoing Game: Helldivers 2
I was honestly so glad that Helldivers 2 won out over all the other games. It's a unique game and more niche, but it also sounds like it isn't being run into the ground like so many of the other games. Or maybe I'm just extra glad that Fortnite didn't take the win.

Best Art Direction: Metaphor: ReFantazio
C'mon now, have you seen the art in this game. Given that it's made by Atlus I expect nothing less than the best and Metaphor of course delivers. I like seeing a stylistic game win this category instead of many of the other titles. However, had Neva taken the win I also would have been excited because the art direction of Neva is downright stunning.

Best Mobile Game: Balatro
Kinda surprising to see this win over Pokemon TCG Pocket. I'm kinda tempted to try it out but I really don't need another mobile game to waste my time away with. I will admit that I wasn't rooting for Wuthering Waves nor Zenless Zone Zero despite liking both games when I played them. But I'm sorry, they aren't mobile games. Pretty sure Wuthering Waves would brick my phone if I tried to play it and both of them are optimized far more for PC.

Best Narrative: Metaphor: ReFantazio
Atlus is known for games with strong narratives. They know how to tell a good story and keep you hooked. I also know that I'm really biased towards Atlus given that Persona is my favorite video game series of all time. But given that they hooked me years ago with Persona 3 FES and have kept my attention since... I think the praise is deserved.

Best Score & Music: Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth
Remember that bias I talked about. I really would have preferred Metaphor but let's be real, a FFVII remake was absolutely going to take the cake. It's a beautiful soundtrack and definitely deserving of recognition.

Best Adaptation: Fallout
Genuinely surprised Arcane didn't win. It's so beloved and has reached so many more people than League of Legends ever would. I'm not saying Fallout doesn't deserve it, but this one definitely surprised me a lot.

Best Multiplayer: Helldivers 2
People love serving the greater good. I would definitely show up to a party and play this! Though, I already know that I would be the weakest link having the most fun!

Debut Indie Game: Balatro
Definitely disappointed that this didn't go to Pacific Drive. I feel like the concept was more unique and it took greater risks, deserving recognition for it. And in a debut indie game, that would be criteria I would personally look for. Pacific Drive, you live on as a winner to me.

Most Anticipated Game: Grand Theft Auto 6
    Maybe one day guys.

Best Role-Playing Game: Metaphor: ReFantazio
It's taken most of this blog post but I can finally spell the title of this game without double checking. Anyway! I definitely think this was deserved. Out of all the games this one feels most like the RPG experience that I think of. To me it's more old school feeling and personally I prefer turn based combat when I think of an RPG. Real time just doesn't hit the same in my opinion.

Content Creator: CaseOh
This man absolutely deserves to win. He's like a beacon of light every time I see his videos pop up on TikTok. Something about his over the top personality always makes me smile. Congrats man!

Best Action: Black Myth: Wukong
I'm so glad to see this game getting some love. Everyone I've talked to loves this game so much and it seems to be well deserved!

Best Sim/ Strategy Game: Frostpunk 2
I legitimately only know about this game because my friend loves it. And through him I've learned so much about it and can confidently say that this is a deserved win. It had steep competition too with Unicorn Overlord but I'm glad it managed to cinch the win!

Players' Voice: Black Myth: Wukong
Heck yea! Again, this game had such high praise and I'm glad people showed up and showed out to give it some love. I also cannot stress how happy I am that it didn't go to a gacha game and especially not Genshin Impact.

So there you have it, my thoughts and opinions on The Game Awards 2024. Honestly, some of these categories truly had steep competition, and while not all my favorites could win, I'm really happy to see so many amazing titles come out on top. And now I'm looking forward to next year!

My Tamagotchi Girlfriend Can't Be This... Scary?

 Miside: Cute and Creepy

It finally happened, Miside finally released. Now I can go hang out with my cute Tamagotchi girlfriend Mita, do little odd jobs for her, and... oh Gods I'm really in the game.

Okay, let's rewind a little.

Back during Steam Next Fest I had the pleasure of trying out the demo of Miside. The game looked incredibly promising when it came to both the cute aesthetic and creepy underlying atmosphere. So before I even started I had high hopes for this one. And let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Not only did I give it high marks in pretty much every category, but I was left instantly wishlisting it in the hopes that I wouldn't have to wait too long.

Just in case you wanted to see my ratings I've included them here!

And now the time has finally come and I get to be reunited with my lovely Mita!

Last night I happily bought the full release of the game and cannot wait to record and play it to share with everyone. Because this demo had me on the edge of my seat. The beginning is so cute as you perform little tasks to make Mita happy. It's cozy in the best sort of way. And I still stand by wanting a game mode where I just get to take care of Mita because that alone was quite enjoyable.

I mean, just look at how cute this interface is!

And as soon as you let your guard down, suddenly it's like the creepiness is amped up to 100! I don't want to give away too much, but the game is all about you being transported into the Tamagotchi with Mita and the life you live(?) together now. It's a fun concept and one I won't soon be forgetting about.

Seriously, I'm not about to forget how much this hallway freaked me out.

So if you've been looking for a creepy cute game to play, I can't recommend Miside enough! You certainly won't ever be lonely, not if Mita has anything to say about it! So stay awhile, maybe even forever!

And if you want even more proof that it's fantastic, consider checking out my playthrough of the demo! The Miside section starts at 30:30.

November Favorites 2024

November Favs 2024

It wouldn't be a blog post if I didn't give my favorite games of the month. As I grow and experiment with different writing styles, the format for this might change, but for now I decided to break the games down into five different categories and give my favorite one I played of each. So enjoy this little mini summary of my five favorite games from November!

Horror Game

I'm a huge horror fan, even if I can be a bit of a baby. And in November I played quite a few horror games, especially because of Steam Next Fest. But there was one game that stood out to me above all the rest.

Creepy Shift is a game I originally played the demo of and fell in love with it. Inspired by a popular Creepy Pasta, this game puts you in a diner where you have the work the dreaded nightshift. And while things start out calm enough, once that jukebox starts going there's truly no rest for the weary.

Why I chose it: This game felt polished, had a clear concept, and has great replayability. Despite the experience not being too long, you can strive to earn more money and get a better grade each time you play it. This makes it enjoyable to go back and try again and again until you get that top score!

Cozy Game

Chances are, if I'm not crying over a horror game, I'm playing some cozy. Bonus points if that coziness includes having my own little farm to take care of and animals to raise. This game came to me in the form of a Lurkit Key Campaign. But even though I got the game for free, there was nothing holding me back from showing my love of it.

Everholm is a game that very much reminds me of Stardew Valley yet also feels very separate from it. While the inspiration is clear, the story itself is so different and the prominent magical touches really stand out to me. Instead of customizing a character, you play as Lilly, a girl searching for her missing sister. And along the way you meet so many interesting characters and embrace the magic of the land of Everholm.

Why I chose it: I initially played this for a Lurkit Key Campaign yet once I was finished filming I still felt the urge to go back. This game drew me in with its beautiful graphics and intriguing storyline. I want to see more of what the story of Everholm has in store for me!

Co-Op Game

Gaming is how I socialize. And I'm sure many people could relate to that. Especially after everything locked down, I started to rely on gaming with friends for almost all my social interaction. So co-op games are something I hold near and dear to my heart. These are the games that bring me joy and bring my friends nothing but strife. In short, they're some of the most important games to me.

While Grounded is by no means a new game, it's completely new to me. I picked this up awhile ago and my friend and I just didn't get around to playing it. This past month though he brought it up and I was like sure, let's go for it. And now I'm subjected to horrors beyond my imagination at least once a week while we chat, catch up, and generally try to survive all the terrifying bugs.

Have I mentioned that most bugs scare me.

Why I chose it: Plain and simple it's fun. This game is enjoyable to play with a friend as you go on misadventures together. I love exploring and reporting back, helping to gather materials, and even tackling the terrifying spiders. It's relaxing and horrifying all in one!

Roguelike Game

This is a new genre to me and one I never thought I would get into. Yet this game won my heart so it gets a special category this month!

Crafty Survivors won my heart from day one. Initially I was only supposed to do a free post for the game so I got to playing it to give it a fair shot. Yet once I started I found I didn't want to stop. So far I've put over 50 hours into this game and haven't even come close to reaching all the content there is so far. Plus, with a YouTube video on the way, there's no sign of me stopping when it comes to my love of Crafty Survivors.

Why I chose it: This game relaxes me. It's something fun to zone out to or a fun challenge to master. There's so much variation between characters and levels that there's something truly for everyone. Plus, there are still more updates coming as the devs race towards the true end game.

Upcoming Game

The moment I saw this upcoming game I was hooked. I played it and it just solidified how much I fell in love with it. Though there were some tough contenders in this category, I really have to give it to this one for managing to combine so many cool elements into one action packed and cozy demo. I really can't wait for what the full release will look like!

Call of Boba blew me away with their demo. Not only was it such a cozy and relatable experience, but the action packed dream sequence was a match made in heaven since it was gameplay similar to Crafty Survivors. It's like this game took all my favorite things and put it into one unique game!

Why I chose it: The graphics, the boba, the minigames, and so much more. This demo felt like the total package and I genuinely fell in love with it. I wanted to play more and know more. Honestly, I keep checking back to see if there are updates on upcoming release because I need this game like I need Boba!

Closing Thoughts

I played a lot of really cool games in November.

I feel I've been given so many opportunities and they've lead me to so many interesting and unique games. I feel grateful for my experiences and I feel hopeful that others will see these games and they'll reach all the success they deserve and more.

So here's to highlighting these awesome games and what other awesome games I'll write about in the future!

Don't Miss These Black Friday Games!

Don't Miss These Black Friday Games!

Just because it's Sunday doesn't mean we're free from the Black Friday sales yet, especially not when it comes to games. And while I only picked up a few games, I wanted to check out the deals on games I already own to give ya'll some recommendations. So let me take your through my wild Steam Library and show off some of the best deals on games I know and love!

For The Cozy Gamer

So you like cozy games. Well here are some of my favorites, what they retail for, and how spicy the sales get! Some of these are staples in the cozy gaming space and some of these are my personal favorites that I have found a lot of peace and joy playing.

Stardew Valley

Original Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $10.49

I wasn't about to start this off with any game other than Stardew Valley. This is a staple in the cozy gaming community and if you don't have it yet please take this opportunity to buy it. Not only is this one of, if not the best, farming games out there, but it also has a bustling mod community. So even if you do everything possible in the game, there are countless mods you can install for a fresh experience. I legitimately cannot recommend this game highly enough so please take advantage of this sale if you don't already own it!

Gourdlets

Original Price: $4.99
Sale Price: $3.99

If you're looking for a cozy game that just allows you to relax with no rush or real limitations, Gourdlets is perfect for you. In this cozy game you just build a villages for these little guys called Gourdlets. They have no preferences or limitations because they're just happy to have whatever homes you give them. Coupled with the cute graphics and beautiful soundtrack, this is a truly cozy experience that will help relax anyone!

Bear & Breakfast

Original Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $10.99

The witty dialogue of Bear & Breakfast is unmatched. In this cozy management game, you play as a bear masquerading as a human and trying his hand at running a chain of bed & breakfasts. You complete little tasks for other creatures living in the forest, decorate your space, and try not to fall victim to the crushing reality that is capitalism. This is such a witty and fun game that has so much more than meets the eye as you get to know your companions and attempt to not scare the guests when you forget to put on your human disguise.

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition

Original Price: $29.99
Sale Price: $4.49

With a deal this substantial that should be reason enough to pick up this beautiful title. Spiritfarer is one of my favorite cozy games and really shifts your perspective on love, loss, and death itself. This is such a beautiful game that really makes you think as you help spirits cross over into the afterlife and slowly piece together the life you yourself lived before becoming the Spiritfarer.

Overcrowd: A Commute 'Em Up

Original Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $4.99

I cannot fully explain the chokehold this resource management sim had on me. It's a simple game really. You have to design metro stations that appeal to everyone, hire employees to keep them running smoothly, and upgrade them to their highest level. Yet, such a simple concept keeps me coming back for hours. It's relaxing and has just enough puzzle solving with how to keep all these trains running, that it isn't a complete no brainer.

For The Horror Gamer

Alright, so maybe cozy isn't your speed. Well, lucky for you I also happen to be a lover of all things horror and have quite a few spooks and scares up my sleeve too. And let's be real, some of these deals are certainly worth dying for!

7 Days to Die

Original Price: $44.99
Sale Price: $31.49

Probably one of the biggest staples in the zombie genre, 7 Days to Die has been around since the beginning of the internet. Okay, maybe not that long but it's certainly been around for a hot minute and much like fine wine, it only gets better with age. This game has come a long way and not that it's finally hit full release it's even better. Plus, there's also a bustling mod scene so even when you think you've done it all, fought zombies of the highest level, there's still more to do. Heck, I have over 300 hours and I'm only just getting to the point where I'm going to put some mods on my game!

Frictional Games Bundle

Hear me out for a second. This gaming bundle has one of the best deals and all of these games are pretty much instant classics of the horror genre.

Original Price: $114.95
Sale Price: $24.19
Games Included: Amnesia: The Bunker, Soma, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Amnesia: Rebirth, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Penumbra Collectors Pack

I could rant and rave about almost all of these games. Frictional Games creates truly iconic horror that preys on what the player fears most and there's an underlying stress to each game that you cannot truly fight the demons that pursue you. Each one of these games will stay with you for years after playing and though I've found them too scary to personally play, I've watched all of them and even tried my hand several times at Amnesia: The Dark Descent. So if nothing else scares you, try this bundle and let me know how far you made it without having to stop and look at pictures of cute animals.

Creepy Shift: Roadside Diner

Original Price: $6.99
Sale Price: $4.89

A newer game that instantly became a favorite of mine. Creepy Shift is inspired by a Creepy Pasta about a roadside diner that has some rather strange rules. Ironically, despite the stress of playing this game, I found the actual mechanics to be quite cozy and fun. You put away deliveries (who the heck is delivering in the middle of the night), clean tables, and generally try to get rid of those blood stains. It's fun and thrilling as I fight for my life and uncover the story as I go! Given that this is volume 1, I'm excited for what future volumes might hold and kinda wish there was a no stress mode so I could just clean up my diner in peace.

Rusty Lake Bundle

I can't help myself, this bundle is also too good to pass up. Plus the personal bias of it being my favorite creepy game series!

Original Price: $28.93
Sale Price: $19.36

This bundle includes all of the Rusty Lake games and their spinoffs such as Cube Escape and The White Door. This series is truly surrealist as you go on a point and click adventure to discover the lore of this strange family and watch a series of events unfold that all lead back to the mysterious Rusty Lake. I've been a fan of this series for years now and if you want to check out a few of the games before buying, many of them are actually available for free on their website!

The Witch's House

Original Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $7.49

I'm a huge fan of RPG Horror games and The Witch's House is actually one of my favorites. It's both witty and spooky, and deals well with some hard topics. I do recommend checking out trigger warnings for this one, but if you're looking for a game to start you off in the genre, this is one of the best. It really shows you how RPG Horror games work and what to expect with other titles.

Perhaps one day I'll write about my RPG Horror experiences too! Afterall, it's one of my favorite horror sub-genres.

For The Variety Gamer

Some games just don't fit in one category or I didn't have enough to make their own yet still wanted to include them. So here are some other game recs that I really think are worth checking out. These range from survival to roguelikes to everything in between. So if you really want to branch out, try these on for size!

Crafty Survivors

Original Price: $11.99
Sale Price: $8.39

This action roguelike is simply built different. Crafty Survivors is a massive game with tons of different levels and unique characters to try out. There's a build for every person as you move through the levels, fixing up your buildings to make yourself even stronger. With more updates on the horizon, this game has captivated me for months now!

Don't Starve Together

Original Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $5.09

DST has been providing me with hours of entertainment for years now. This was the game I played to get through those initial days of the pandemic and it will always have a place in my heart because of it. It's fantastic to play with friends and even years later there are still free updates being created for this beautiful game. And once again, if you somehow manage to get bored of the base game despite the frequent updates, there are also tons of amazing mods that you can easily download for the game. These include quality of life or things to make your game ten times harder. There's something for everyone in DST and I love that every world is completely customizable!

Oneshot

Original Price: $9.99
Sale Price: $5.99

Words cannot do this game justice. At its core, Oneshot is a puzzle/ adventure game where you need to guide Niko through a world plagued by darkness. I can't say anymore than that because this game is best played with limited knowledge of what's happening. It's absolutely beautiful though and a game that has stuck with me even years later.

Terraria

Original Price: $9.99
Sale Price: $4.99

The devs said they were finished updating this game yet still it carries on. In this pocket sized adventure game you truly get to do it all. It's the sort of game that you keep going back to year after year just to see what new and interest things have been added. Plus, how many games let you build a Hell-evator!

In Conclusion

And there you have it, my Black Friday recommendations of games I already own. Each one of these games has captivated me and had me near obsessed with it at some point over the years. And writing this has made me want to revisit each of them again just to see what's changed. They hold fond memories for me and I hope you might create some memories with them as well!

Let me know if you pick up any of these amazing games or if you have any that you think should be added to the list!
